It turns out that I have exactly one available sunny window to start my seeds in, and as luck would happen it’s a) not very big, and b) susceptible to toddler predation.

The chia seeds the toddler pulled out are no big deal. They were from the murder compost, how killer is it? test and I wasn’t planning on transplanting these. Actually, they’re a fun toy for the kid, so I’m keeping the survivors handy for her to play with.
But, I’m starting my vegetables now too, and will very soon be needing plenty of sunny window space that hopefully won’t suffer the same fate as the chia. To help try to solve the problem, I ordered some easy to install acrylic window shelves that are just the right width to hold my seed trays.
These shelves came with everything I needed to get them installed. I turned my shelves upside down when I installed them so there’s a lip on either edge – a little toddler insurance incase she pulls on the cables. Gettign these thing up was incredibly easy. Getting them leveled was a bit of a challenge because the locking nuts are released by pushing down on them and if the shelves aren’t slotted in just right they can push down on the mechanism. Once I worked that out, I just added a little weight to the shelves as I adjusted them and the problem went away.

I’m calling it my mini window greenhouse and am getting ready to revamp an old aquarium light to light it up from the room side as well. If I need a little more space down the line, I’ll absolutely buy these same shelves again.
